Not long after the current owners took over the management of Creve Coeur Airport, Al Stix decided that a great way to get folks to come out to the airport was to cook a BBQ style lunch every Sunday. The first Sunday BBQs were cooked on the old cinder block grill in the grass area of the parking lot. Pretty soon, Al Sr decided to start cooking on Weber Kettles near the office but before long, the lunch crowds were too big for those backyard type grills. The next step was a 55 gallon drum converted to a grill but when that rusted out, the larger Bellson grills became Al's standard cookers and have remained so for nearly thirty years. Nobody knows for sure but the total number of lunches and special event meals that Al Stix Sr cooked at Creve Coeur Airport probably number close to 1,900. He rarely ever missed a Sunday lunch!
Since Al Stix's passing, Sunday lunch is cooked by Bob Cameron but as always, is open to all. You do not need to be based at Creve Coeur Airport to enjoy some good old fashioned hangar flying over one of Al's famous BBQ recipe meals. These days the cost is usually $8.00 per person but remember "Either/Or, (not both)". If you are wondering what the heck that means, come find out for yourself!
